Gianna and Lexus here, reporting for JJ Bender!
A few weeks ago we were asked to watch Amy Cuddy's TED talk, "Your body language shapes who you are! "
We all loved the video and really took something from it, but us being the most introverted people at the company had the opportunity to go see Amy speak live at the 92Y last week, Thursday January 21st!
The talk, On Presence and Power, was mostly related to Cuddy's book Presence: Bringing your BOLDEST SELF to your BIGGEST CHALLENGES. We each got a signed copy of the book, which we are both looking forward to applying to our everyday lives.
We learned things such as people should influence themselves. No one should be influenced by the world around them but by what you, yourself, thinks is best.
Cuddy mentioned that telling stories is one of the most powerful ways to make a point. But in order for your point to be heard you must BELIEVE your story! Speaking slow and taking pauses while speaking is a way to enunciate your power. This shows that you are engaged and interested in the interaction you are having. While all of this is true, it is okay to say that you are not present at the moment, but you will be at a later time. This shows you are confident enough to recognize when you are at a moment of weakness. People will respect that you say something like this since they want you to bring your all rather than see a lesser version.
This show was something we both enjoyed and would love to see Amy Cuddy again. She is a great inspiration and role model!
